Star Trek Beyond is the next installment in the Star Trek movie series and filming has already begun. The release is planned for 2016 and this new movie will feature the characters fans are already familiar with. There have not been many details released regarding the plot of the movie, but a very brief trailer shows a damaged spaceship and the crew finding themselves stranded on an unfamiliar planet. Captain Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew will be fighting an enemy that we know nothing of other than the fact he is played by Idris Elba. Fortunately, the Enterprise crew will have a powerful ally on their side with Sofia Boutella’s character.

Star Trek Beyond Production Still Shrouded In Secrecy

The movie is shrouded in secrecy and more details will probably be revealed as the release date approaches. And while we don’t know much about the plot, we know plenty about the production and filming process, including filming locations. The filming locations for Star Trek Beyond are interesting because they could yield some possible clues regarding what the mysterious planet where the crew is stranded could look like. We know that production is headed to Dubai, which could mean that this setting will be used to create a futuristic city for the new adventures of Captain Kirk and his crew.

There is a reason other than the futuristic setting of Dubai that could explain why Star Trek Beyond is being filmed overseas. The Abu Dhabi Film Commission is currently offering interesting rebates to foreign productions that film in Dubai. The 30% rebate has already attracted a number of huge productions, including movies such as Furious 7 and Syriana. The recent blockbuster Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is known as the most expensive production to ever shoot in Dubai.

Dubai seems to be an attractive option for movie producers for reasons other than the tax rebate. The cast of Star Trek Beyond talked about the amazing experience they had while filming in Dubai during the Dubai International Film Festival. And Chris Pine, John Cho, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban are not the only ones who enjoyed working in Dubai since producer Jeffrey Chernov said that a red carpet premiere for the movie would take place in Dubai. A total of 20 days were spent shooting in Dubai back in October, and Dubai residents were apparently excited about this project with 2,000 of them lining up for a chance to become extras in the new Star Trek movie.

Dubai will be featured in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond movie as a futuristic setting but most of the scenes were shot in Vancouver, British Columbia. Some of the filming locations might look familiar to fans of the science-fiction series Stargate, which was primarily shot in Vancouver as well. Filming large productions outside of the U.S. seems to have become a commonplace practice with more movies being shot in Canada and even in Australia. This is the case of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which was mostly shot in Australia. There have also been talks of Marvel choosing Australia as a shooting location for the upcoming movies Captain Marvel and Thor: Ragnarok.
