It has been revealed that Dubai boasts an unemployment rate of 0.5%, which equates to 2.7 million people being employed. This information was announced by the Dubai Statistics Centre as part of the results from its Labour Force Survey 2017. Dubai’s unemployment rate of 0.5% is significantly lower than the global average and it highlights the strength of Dubai’s economy.
Dubai’s Impressively Low Unemployment Rate
With a high employment rate in various sectors, the total employment rate in Dubai reached 2,778,000 in 2017. Of this total, 2,077,603 people were working in Dubai itself and the remainder were residing outside of Dubai. In the last few years, Dubai has added an average of 110,000 people to its resident workforce annually.
The Executive Director of the Dubai Statistics Center, Arif Al Muhairi, explained that the results form the Labour Force Survey 2017 reflect the flexibility and strength of Dubai’s economy.
The Labour Force Survey 2017 shows that the percentage of working age people who were employed increased by close to 1% in 2017. This took the total number from 83.1% to 82.2%. The largest percentage of this increase was accounted for by female workers.
The survey also shows that the economic participation rate of Emirati men and women in Dubai increased by 3%, reaching 51.1%. Overall, Emirati men had an economic participation rate of 65.4% and Emirati women had an economic participation rate of 37.4%. This showcases that the government’s policies to promote gender balance and economic participation among men and women in Dubai are having a positive effect.
Arif Al Muhairi went on to say that the unemployment rate of men in Dubai increased by 0.6% and it stood at 2.6% in 2017. Furthermore, the unemployment rate of women increased by 0.5% and stood at 4.9% in 2017. Despite this increase, Dubai remains to have one of the most impressively low unemployment rates globally.
